The Cult of Poseidon in the Black Sea Region

Gorgia, Stella

This dissertation was written as part of the Master in Black Sea Cultural Studies at the International Hellenic University of Thessaloniki. As an archaeologist I decided that it would be more appropriate to choose a subject that was related to my studies. Therefore, I came up with the idea for my dissertation’s theme to be about the cult of Poseidon, who I consider the most powerful and interesting of all the Olympian Gods, and how his worship has passed through the Black Sea region. The fact that it is such an ancient subject, compared to our times, makes it seem quite demanding finding out if Poseidon was actually worshipped in the Black Sea during antiquity. However, through the science of archaeology it is not; all the inscriptions, written sources, and archaeological finds that I found were the clues that helped me find out which ancient Greek colonies of the Black Sea area included Poseidon in their cults. In other words, this dissertation is a thorough presentation of all the Black Sea archaeological finds related to the Sea God that constituted the actual evidence of the worship of Poseidon in the Black Sea area. The ancient cities mentioned here (most of them coastal), are being presented in a geographical order from south to east and from north to west, starting with the Bosporan straits.
