The Armenian emigration from Crimea after the 1778 and their final destination

This dissertation was written as part of the MA in Black Sea Cultural Studies at the International Hellenic University. An effort was made to include as much information as possible, to reference as many sources as could be found. Due to the lack of bibliography in English, this dissertation was mainly based on Armenian and Russian sources, which include documents and letters from State archives, works of historians and of many different travelers, who visited the region of Azov / Don during the late 18th and 19th centuries. The aim of the dissertation is to analyze the emigration of Armenians from Crimean peninsula to the region of Novorossiia of the Russian Empire, which was organized by the Russian government in late 18th century. Also, in the dissertation will be discussed the different opinions about the reasons, the aims and the outcome of the emigration, but also the subsequent remigration of part of the Armenians back to their previous homes in Crimean peninsula. There will be also analyzed the successfulness of the emigration, how did it affect the emigrants and which efforts they tried to make to protect their ethnic identity and their language, what was the role of the Armenian Church in this process.
