Evaluation of the competitiveness of business entrepreneurship and environment of Armenia

The main aim of the present thesis is to evaluate the competitiveness of Armenia‟s economy and business environment since 2000s, as well as to clarify the strengths and weakness of Armenia‟s economy and business environment. Also, the economic competitiveness of Armenia for the year of 2012 will be compared with the economic competitiveness of the Black Sea 10 region, EU 27 countries, USA and China. In this thesis special attention is given to the advantages and disadvantages of the investments and businesses to invest in Armenia, the possible ways for the improvement of Armenian business environment and in order to become more competitive and attractive to investors, as well as weaknesses and structural problems of Armenia‟s economy are defined and relevant policy recommendations which will increase productivity and effectiveness of Armenia‟s economy are provided. This thesis consists of three sections. In the first section, the competitiveness of Armenia‟s economy is evaluated using the World Economic Forum‟s Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), especially 12 pillars of the GCI Index (Institutions; Infrastructure, Macroeconomic environment; Health and basic education; Higher education and training; Goods markets efficiency; Labor market efficiency; Financial market development; Technological readiness; Market size; Business sophistication; and Innovation). In the second section Armenia‟s business environment is evaluated by the World Bank‟s Easy of Doing Business Index (EDB) and 10 pillars of EDB Index (Starting a business; Dealing with construction permits; Getting electricity; Registering property; Getting credit; Protecting investors; Paying taxes; Trading across borders; Enforcing contracts; and Resolving insolvency). The 3rd section is the section of policy recommendations which provides a set of recommendations necessary to increase and enhance the quality, productivity and competitiveness of Armenia‟s business environment and entrepreneurship at global level. The core bibliography for this thesis is mainly based on the various national and international reports prepared within the World Bank, World Economic Forum, USAID, Economy and Values Research Center of Armenia, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, 10 (OECD), International Monetary Fund, Transparency International, International Property Rights Index, etc.
