Nitration of 1-arylpyrroles la-e with acetyl nitrate, and 1-arylpyrroles, la-e and 1-(2-ethoxycarbonylbenzyl)pyrrole 4 with trifluoroacetyl nitrate gave the corresponding 2-nitro isomers 2a-e and 5, and 3-nitro isomers 3a-e and 6. 3-Nitropyrroles 3d and 3e were further nitrated with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids to give compounds 10, 11 and 12, respectively. Under the same conditions 1-(2-ethoxycarbonylbenzyl)-3-nitropyrrole 6 gave derivative 13.
