NEW APPROACHES TO DIASPORAS MERCHANT NETWORKS   THE  GREEK  COMMUNITY IN  MANCHESTER The main question of this study is whether we can identify sub-groups in the Greek Diaspora with specific internal features and external motives. We shall examine closely the case of different sub-groups that made up part of the central core of Greek Diaspora from 1780 to 1870. The study focuses on two types of network: The first type relates to the inland trade routes while the second represents the maritime trade diaspora. The inland network consists of natives including Vlachs from Epirus and Western Macedonia, particularly from the mountain region of Pindos (northwest of modern Greece), who carried out the commercial transactions between the Ottoman and the Habsburg Empires. The second network is more well known and consists of the islanders of the Chiot maritime transport trade who conducted the commercial exchanges between the Ottoman and the British Empires (London, Manchester) and covered almost every corner of the Greek entrepreneurial Diaspora. The Vlachs and the Chiots formed networks that expanded from their places of origin to their places of settlement. The two networks were based on three common characteristics of their members: religion, language and place of origin. However, they displayed a distinct difference: the Vlachs are considered an ethnic group distinguished by specific cultural features, while the Chiots are only characterized by their place of origin. Nevertheless the importance of both groups was pivotal for the social and economic formation of Greek diaspora merchant communities. Recent works in the field provide new prespectives in the study of merchant diasporas and commercial networks through a comparative approach. A possible outcome of such an approach might be the reassessment of this major issue that is generally known as Greek Diaspora and has been frequently promoted by Greek national historiography in a rhetorical way.
